Texas has three federally recognized tribes with active land in the state. The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas has a reservation in Polk County (east Texas); the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas has a reservation in Maverick County (southwest Texas, US-Mexico border); the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (Tigua) has a reservation in El Paso County (87 eligible tracts). All three tribes have federally recognized status and Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs) or equivalent contacts. EDT has not published a tribal consultation protocol for the OZ 2.0 process. Submitters nominating tracts in Polk, Maverick, or El Paso counties — or adjacent areas — should contact the relevant tribal government before submitting. The Kickapoo Nation in Kansas (Brown County) is separate from the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas.
